Mastering Negative Watercolour Painting: A Beginner-Friendly Way to Improve Your Skills
(video tutorial underneath- scroll down)
Watercolour painting has an undeniable charm. The fluidity, the subtle blending of colours, and the soft, dreamlike textures make it a medium unlike any other. But for many beginners, watercolour can also feel unpredictable and challenging to control. This is where negative painting comes in—a technique that not only opens up new creative possibilities but also builds a strong foundation in watercolour techniques. Whether you’re just starting out or looking for a mindful practice to deepen your skills, negative painting is a wonderful choice.
In this blog post, we’ll explore what negative watercolour painting is, why it’s such a rewarding technique, and how it can help you become more confident with watercolours. As a special treat, I’ll also share a recording of my Valentine’s workshop, where we use this technique to create a layered love hearts painting—a perfect project to get you started!
What Is Negative Watercolour Painting?
Negative Watercolour painting is a technique where you focus on painting around the subject rather than the subject itself. Instead of painting the shapes you want to highlight (like flowers, leaves, or hearts), you paint the spaces around them. By gradually building up layers of colour and defining the edges of your subject, you create depth and contrast in your artwork.
This approach might seem counterintuitive at first. After all, most of us naturally want to paint the object itself. But by shifting your focus to the spaces in between, you train your eyes to see shapes and relationships more clearly. Negative painting isn’t just a technique; it’s a way of thinking about composition, contrast, and light.
Why Negative Watercolour Painting Is Perfect for Beginners
One of the biggest hurdles for beginners is learning to control watercolour while embracing its unpredictable nature. Negative painting offers a structured yet forgiving way to practice essential watercolour skills.
Here’s why it’s so beginner-friendly:
1. Improves Brush Control
In negative painting, you work carefully around shapes, which helps you develop precise brush control. Whether you’re painting crisp edges or soft transitions, the process encourages a steady hand and mindful movements.
2. Teaches Layering
Layering is a fundamental watercolour skill, and negative painting gives you plenty of opportunities to practice. Each layer adds depth to your painting, and you learn how to build up colour gradually without overworking the paper.
3. Focuses on Light and Contrast
Negative painting trains your eyes to see contrasts and relationships between light and dark areas. This is key to creating dynamic and balanced compositions in any art form.
4. Encourages Patience
Watercolour often requires a slower, more thoughtful approach, and negative painting embodies this beautifully. It’s a mindful practice that helps you slow down and enjoy the process.
5. Achieves Stunning Results
Despite its simplicity, negative painting can produce incredibly striking and professional-looking results. The layered effect adds depth and intrigue, making your artwork stand out.
How Negative Painting Helps You Master Watercolours
Negative painting isn’t just a standalone technique; it’s a gateway to mastering watercolours. Here’s how it strengthens your overall skills:
a. Understanding Transparency
Watercolour is all about transparency, and negative painting makes this concept tangible. By layering translucent washes, you see how colours interact and overlap, creating beautiful effects.
b. Building Confidence with Washes
Flat washes, graded washes, and wet-on-wet techniques are foundational skills in watercolour. Negative painting gives you ample practice with these techniques as you build up your layers.
c. Developing a Keen Eye for Detail
As you paint around your subject, you’ll naturally start to notice subtle details and shapes. This attention to detail translates into all areas of your art practice.
d. Embracing the “Less Is More” Approach
Watercolour is unique in its ability to create soft, delicate effects. Negative painting teaches you to work with subtlety, using fewer strokes and lighter touches to achieve impact.
What Makes Negative Painting Relaxing and Rewarding
Aside from its technical benefits, negative painting is also a deeply calming and rewarding process. It’s almost meditative, as you focus on one layer at a time and watch your painting come to life. The gradual unveiling of your subject feels satisfying and magical—like revealing a hidden image.
For many people, art is not just about the final result but about the experience of creating. Negative painting embodies this philosophy perfectly. It’s not rushed or chaotic; it’s thoughtful, methodical, and peaceful.
A Perfect Project: Layered Love Hearts
One of my favourite projects for introducing negative painting is a layered love hearts design. It’s simple, beautiful, and perfect for any occasion, especially Valentine’s Day. By painting around overlapping heart shapes, you create a glowing, layered effect that feels both modern and timeless.
In my Valentine’s Watercolour Workshop, I guide you through the entire process step by step. Here’s what you’ll need to follow along:
Materials:
Watercolour paper or a sketchbook
Watercolour paints (any palette will do!)
Brushes (round brushes in small and medium sizes work best)
Water and a cloth/kitchen roll
A pencil and eraser for sketching
Steps:
Sketch the Heart Shapes: Lightly sketch overlapping heart shapes on your paper. Keep the lines simple and minimal, as you’ll paint over them.
First Layer: Start with a light wash of colour, painting around the edges of the outermost heart shapes. Let it dry completely.
Add Layers: Gradually build up darker colours, painting around additional shapes with each layer. Take your time and let each layer dry before adding the next.
Refine Details: Use a small brush to refine edges and add contrast where needed. This step brings your painting to life!
Finishing Touches: Add any final details or highlights, and admire your glowing, layered hearts.

Tips for Success with Negative Painting
Start Light: Always begin with the lightest colours and gradually build up to darker shades.
Work in Layers: Let each layer dry completely before moving on to the next. This prevents colours from bleeding and ensures clean edges.
Use the Right Brush: A round brush with a fine point is ideal for painting around shapes with precision.
Embrace Imperfections: Watercolour has a mind of its own, and that’s part of its beauty. Don’t worry about perfection—focus on enjoying the process.
Practice Patience: Negative painting takes time, but the results are worth it. Allow yourself to slow down and immerse in the creative flow.
